Equity for Equality: Inspirational diversity training and talks
Supported by the new IY(UK) Equity Committee

Saturday 1st May, 3 – 5.30pm on Zoom Webinar

Join us and be inspired by this educational and accessible 2 hour 30 minute programme for all yoga practitioners, co-designed with Iyengar Yoga in Action (IYiA) and Challenge Consultancy. Featuring inspirational talks by Iyengar Yoga (UK) teachers: Craig Blake, Tina Freeland, and Margaret Hall, we mark the launch of the new IY(UK) Equity Committee and offer our community FREE online access to leading equality and diversity company Challenge Consultancy, with a training session designed by director Femi Otitoju and consultant/trainer Suky Bains as our facilitator.

Suky will work with us to address the context of unconscious bias with a particular focus on race, intersectionality, and ally behaviour. It will enable participants to understand how unconscious bias can affect our everyday thinking and consider strategies for mitigating the impact.

Suky is an excellent and sought after facilitator who has the ability to develop and encourage others to safely challenge their attitudes and beliefs; whilst increasing knowledge, understanding and awareness of diversity issues. Her skills are based on the central principles of self-empowerment, responsibility and the ability to encourage individuals to abandon traditional thinking and grasp new ideas.

In addition to Suky’s work with us, our three speakers Margaret, Craig, and Tina will further contextualise these issues within the yoga sphere, so that participants can really understand how anti-racism and acceptance of differences aligns with our yoga practice.

Yoga gives us lenses to experience the ultimate equality of all beings – the lens to perceive (not just theorize) the other as identical to oneself spiritually – and this realization lends itself very naturally to equal-mindedness, compassion, fairness, love and empathy. It is this knowledge that the great sages and seers of ancient India, as well as our modern teachers such as Guru-ji Iyengar, have set out to disseminate by perpetuating the various moksa traditions handed down through the centuries in India. In short, it is this that makes yoga distinctive from other types of activities, and it is this that yoga has to contribute to and combine with, all the other necessary activisms our present moment is calling us to undertake.” – Edwin Bryant, IY(UK) Virtual Convention 2020

You must book your free place to receive the link to join
This session will be broadcast as a Zoom live webinar on Saturday afternoon from 3 – 5.30pm. This is free to attend and available to all yoga practitioners, but you will need to register to receive the joining link (entirely separate to the Convention)

Access to All

We urge all Yoga practitioners to attend as we aim to lift the shutters and open hearts and minds, and move towards becoming part of a local and international yoga movement for social justice. Join us to make a difference as we learn how to stand against all forms of discrimination and prejudice, as we live by the principles of yoga in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, to treat all equally, with Karuṇā: compassion and Ahimsā: non violence.

Let’s work together in transforming our community into one that includes and reflects the diversity of our world!

Please note: this session will not be recorded, so book your FREE place to attend live
