About The Weekend
The event is for all yoga practitioners, teachers and students, and will be a weekend studying Bhakti Yoga and the Krishna tradition.
This weekend will consist of study with Edwin, who returns to MDIY for a third year to spend time studying the ideas and teachings of yoga. Saturday and Sunday will also include asana classes with our very own Julie Brown, to support the philosophy study.
We will read the Bhakti Sutras, and some of the related stories. If you have a copy of Bhakti Yoga: Tales and Teachings from the Bhagavata Purana, by Edwin Bryant, you can bring this; we will send out the relevant sections via email in advance of the workshop, so you do not have to buy the book if you don’t already have it.
The Bhagavata Purana is focused exclusively on Isvara pranidhana – the various modes of bhakti (devotion) to Isvara (God). It is the principal Sanskrit textual source dedicated to the accounts of Lord Vishnu’s incarnations and activities, and to the lives and practices of the most famous yogi exemplars who dedicated their lives to seeking and experiencing the ultimate Truths of the individual self and its loving relationship with a personal God. All the teachings of the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita are to be found in these narratives, along with so much more, but in far more developed ways, and embodied in the form of charming and delightful tales that capture the heart and mind, the goal of bhakti.
No prior knowledge is necessary for this weekend; the only requirement is to bring an open mind and sincere heart.

About The Teachers
Edwin Bryant is the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University where he teaches on Hindu philosophy and religion. He received his Ph.D in Indic languages and Cultures from Columbia University in 1997. He taught Hinduism at Harvard University for three years.
Edwin has received numerous awards and fellowships, published six books and authored a number of articles on Vedic history, yoga, and the Krishna tradition.
As a personal practitioner of yoga for 35 years, a number of them spent in India studying with traditional teachers, where he returns yearly, Edwin strives to combine academic scholarship and rigour with sensitivity towards traditional knowledge systems.
Edwin currently teaches workshops on the Yoga Sūtras, Bhagavad Gita, and Hindu Philosophy at yoga studios and teacher training courses throughout the USA and Europe.
Thanks to an invitation from the Iyengar Yoga Teacher Patricia Walden to lecture on Yoga Philosophy, Edwin was introduced to the Iyengar community. His book “The Yoga Sūtras Of Patañjali” (2009) is dedicated to her, the entire Iyengar Yoga Community and to Guruji himself ‘for his enormous contribution to the well-being of humanity…’. B. K. S. Iyengar wrote the foreword to Edwin Bryant’s book.
Julie Brown qualified in 1981 and now holds the Advanced Junior Level 1 certificate, which was awarded personally by Geeta Iyengar in 2015. Here in the UK, there are only two teachers currently teaching who hold an Advanced certificate.
Along with Tricia and Marion, Julie is part of our teacher training team here at the MDIIY. As well as teaching beginner and general classes she travels around the UK and internationally to teach workshops.
