I began training teachers and assessing in the UK in 1996. In 2000 I moved to live in San Diego California, where I continued to train teachers at all levels and to assess teachers going for their first or higher level of certification. In 2008 I began teaching and training teachers in Mexico and completed my work there in 2017 by which time I had trained over 60 Iyengar yoga teachers up to Intermediate Junior III level of certification. I now teach and train teachers in Palm Desert California USA, and at YogaSouth Iyengar Yoga Centre in Lancing, Sussex on the south coast of the UK where I now live with my husband Randall.

My father first introduced me to yoga in the 1970's as he practiced from books. As a keen gymnast I was amazed at the pictures of the asanas in Light on Yoga. My yoga practice has developed further under the guidance of certified teachers and now, as a teacher myself, I have also helped my father along his yogic path too!
I was fortunate to share my plans to open a yoga centre with BKS Iyengar and in a letter he commented that the space looked "a calm and peaceful place".

I have been teaching Iyengar yoga in Sheffield for almost 40 years. Some of my students have been with me almost that long!
I have taught from Beginners level through to intermediate classes, specialist workshops and therapy classes. I have also trained many teachers to Introductory certificates and beyond, and continue to mentor trainee teachers and those working towards further certification.
It has been my joy to run Sheffield Iyengar Yoga Centre since 2005 and to create there a dedicated and warm community of teachers and students. We have , in pre covid times, also welcomed many International teachers to the Centre. As well as managing our classes now both online and in person we continue to offer regular New Starter courses to those completely new to Yoga.
We are in an ongoing process of aiming to improve the diversity and inclusive nature of our community so offer special days and classes for those with larger and stiffer bodies and offer discounts for those on low incomes.

My journey with Iyengar Yoga began in 1995 when I quickly became devoted to the practice. By 2000, I had obtained certification as a teacher and I have since had the opportunity to study with esteemed teachers such as Geetaji and Prashantji in Pune, as well as Rajiv and Swati Chanchani in northern India.
As a registered Iyengar Yoga Therapeutic Teacher and Mentor, I am dedicated to supporting teacher trainees and am particularly interested in the therapeutic applications of yoga. In my free time, I volunteer as a secretary for Bradford District Iyengar Yoga (BDIY) to help support my local Iyengar community. My interest in the yoga tradition and its related sciences led to me studying Ayurveda, a sister discipline of yoga, and I am a qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner. Prior to dedicating myself full-time to yoga, I had a diverse career, including ten years in the charitable sector.
As a Level 3 teacher, qualified in therapy, and registered mentor, I am dedicated to sharing my knowledge and passion for Iyengar Yoga with others.

After training with Jeanne Maslen in Manchester, I qualified in 1977 and gained Level 3 in 1991. I taught locally for many years in Glossop, Ashton and Sheffield. When I retired from my 'day job' I changed focus from general classes to recuperative. I feel that I can usefully pass on my experience of yoga poses that calm the nerves and restore energy. I currently teach at the MDIY. A Slower-paced class on Thursdays at 1 pm, and also a monthly Friday Recuperative class. My understanding of yoga has developed over all this time as a practitioner and a teacher – I wouldn't be without its balance and calmness.

My initial training was with Carole Lawrence and Jeanne Maslen. Later I was a student of David Reddicen. As a scientist working in women's health I look at yoga as a science but also as an art. Through Jeanne, Mr Iyengar helped me recover from a serious accident. This started me off on the path of teaching and researching remedial yoga, and I have also carried out research in yoga as applied to pregnancy. Most recently I have been working with Uday Bhosale and Debra Bartholomew. I split my time between Manchester and Brecon.

I began to practice yoga as a teenager and now many years on, it forms the foundation on which my whole life has been built. Thanks to BKS Iyengar, I feel I have found a sound, efficacious way to keep healthy, and full of gratitude and joy from the blessings that yoga bestows on body, mind, and spirit. I have been so lucky to be able to learn better ways to practice with the inspiring teachers trained in his method. It is really worth a try.

Laura Potts
Laura first learned Iyengar yoga with Angela Farmer, one of Guruji’s early UK students, back in 1977. For a good while after that she had no access to an Iyengar teacher, but continued a daily practice using Light on Yoga, until learning with John Claxton and Lillian Biggs in the early 1990s. She started teacher training with Lillian in 1994. She has continued to develop her professional learning, and is currently certified at Level 3; she has visited RIMYI three times for a month’s attendance at classes.
As a teacher in higher and further education for nearly thirty years, Laura has a practical and wide ranging experience in different pedagogical methods and approaches, and of working with students of all sorts of abilities. Her background in philosophy (BA Hons and PhD) and in health education (PG DipHEd) provide a strong foundation to her yoga teaching and understanding.
She has a particular expertise in, and a commitment to, teaching students with mental health problems, and has taught in psychiatric hospitals for over twenty years, as well as classes for MIND, the WEA Mental Health Division, and a class supported by IYDF for community mental health service users. In 2007 she contributed extensively to a review published by the Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health on yoga for mental health, and has published other articles on the topic too.
For eight years she taught yoga to medical students, helping them to establish their own practice, and academically requiring them to research the health benefits of Iyengar yoga. In 2017, she began to study the Therapeutics course with Stephanie Quirk, truncated by the pandemic. In 2021, she facilitated the IYUK Long Covid pilot study, drawing on her social science research experience; she co-supervised a graduate student at York University to compile a research literature review on therapeutic applications of yoga, and a student-researcher at York St John University, who produced a quantative and qualitative evaluation of the pilot study.
Her yoga teaching is grounded in a deep love, understanding and appreciation of Iyengar yoga as lived experience. The fundamental principles of yama and niyama resonate through her teaching, her social and political engagement and way of living.
