Liz Greenway
I am based in Canada Water, South East London and also near Colchester/Sudbury on the Essex/Suffolk borders.
I began yoga in my 20s as an aid to my well being at a stressful time in my life. I recall meditating over daffodils in a tranformational class in which I felt that I was ‘coming home to myself’ – something of the state of mind I was enabled to release into through the containment of the helpfully positioned asana, in the atmosphere of a supportive yet challenging enough class. I undertook various different styles of yoga for some years. I was fortunate to discover iyengar yoga taught by Dolores Pinto in Adult Education, where I also worked. At that time my work was enabling adult students with physical and learning disabilities to access the curriculum through reasonable adjustments and also through training staff. I retrained as a psychotherapist and my yoga practice has been a crucial part of my deep dive into the experiential understanding of others and self. I have always enjoyed clinical work, academia and also sports, but this added a whole other layer. It has also been an instructive educator of the relationship between psyche and soma, spirit and breathe. I enjoy both an active asana practice as well as a contemplative, reflective pranayama process.
In 2008 I started my immersion and investment specifically in iyengar yoga, in search of further wisdom and a more rigorous, safer practice. I started back from the beginning and undertook a Foundation course at the Institute in Maida Vale and then worked through each step and level of iyengar yoga that I could access over subsequent years and have been invested in the artistic science of it ever since. I love it’s rigour and the intelligent sensitivity that I find in this practice which has become a way of life for me. After completing a doctorate in the psychology of organisations, I decided that my time for teacher training had arrived at last! I achieved the Level 1 assessment in October 2024, having experienced the inspiring mentorship of Alaric Newcombe, from whom I continue to learn, and additionally benefitted enormously from assisting in-class with Louise Radinger and also Harshini Wikramanayake. I see iyengar yoga as a crucial part of lifelong learning and supportive of development in every plane. I will be considering where to teach regular classes …
