Light On Yoga first edition

Light on Yoga: 60 Years of a Living Tradition

More than six decades after its publication, Light on Yoga by B. K. S. Iyengar continues to shape the way yoga is practised, studied, and taught around the world.

Often described as the “Bible of Yoga,” the book introduced generations of practitioners to a systematic and accessible approach to asana, pranayama, and yoga philosophy. Its detailed instructions, sequencing, photographs and integration of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali transformed how yoga could be learnt. Despite all the other yoga books that have been published since Light on yoga still retains its iconic status.

It describes more than 200 yoga postures known as asanas, and is illustrated with 600 monochrome photographs of Mr Iyengar demonstrating them.

As Michelle Goldberg wrote in The New Yorker, the book “remains unparalleled as a guide to asana practice,” while Yoga Journal noted that when teachers refer to “correct” yoga, they are often drawing from the precision and clarity established through Iyengar’s work.

What made Light on Yoga so revolutionary was not simply the number of postures it contained, but the depth of observation behind them. Iyengar approached the body as a vehicle for understanding and self-study.

He wrote:

“My body was the book and my mind and awareness was the keen pupil.”

The book emerged from decades of rigorous practice, experimentation and teaching. At a time when yoga was still relatively unknown in the West, Iyengar sought to make the subject available to ordinary people through clarity, discipline and direct experience.

The beginnings of Light on Yoga

Beatrice Harthan was a lawyer who worked at the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Prisoners’ fund at the Old Bailey.  She received an MBE for her work. In the Iyengar yoga world she is known for her crucial role in getting Light on Yoga published. B.K.S. Iyengar was eternally grateful.

This is an extract from a letter to her: ”I am grateful to you. But for you I would not have come in contact with Mr.Yorke. You are the instrument really for this book to take that shape. Much credit and merit of this book goes to you.”

What made Light on Yoga different?

When Light on Yoga came out, it helped people understand yoga in a whole new way. When B.K.S. Iyengar wrote Light on Yoga, yoga was not widely accessible. Much of the knowledge was held within traditional lineages, often shared privately between teacher and student.

While earlier texts such as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita reference postures, they do not present the kind of systematic, detailed instruction that  Mr Iyengar introduced.

Light on Yoga was groundbreaking in several ways:

  • Detailed techniques for each posture
  • Clear sequencing, including progressive courses
  • Photographic guidance, offering visual clarity
  • Integration of philosophy, including a synopsis of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
  • Health benefits and precautions, making practice more accessible

The book brought clear structure to yoga. It showed sequences, levels of difficulty and ways to adjust poses. These are making it easier for teachers and students to learn step by step. They started noticing the health benefits when practiced carefully.

A steady, reliable foundation

As part of this 60-year project, IY(UK) is gathering conversations and reflections from teachers and long-standing practitioners exploring how Light on Yoga has shaped their practice, teaching, and relationship to yoga over the years.

Today, in an age of endless online content and rapidly consumed information, many practitioners are once again returning to Light on Yoga as a steady foundation. Across the Iyengar Yoga community, teachers continue to speak about the importance of reading, re-reading, and rediscovering the text over time.

For newer practitioners, the book can initially feel vast or intimidating. Yet many senior teachers describe it not as something to “complete,” but as something to live with. Our understanding of it changes through the years of practice.

More than sixty years on, the book continues to do what its title promises:
to shine light on yoga, not only through posture, but through observation and stepping on the mat to practice and feel for ourselves.

In a time where yoga is widely available through classes, online platforms, and social media the book offers something increasingly valuable:
