Ask trainees to prepare a talk on ‘Yoga and Iyengar in a nutshell’

Name of contributor: Jenny-May While

Sections: All

This is a good way to encourage a trainee to practise talking to people confidently and precisely about what yoga is, and what is specific about Iyengar’s methodology. It can be given as an individual exercise but works really well in a group. Put a time-limit on the answers to encourage precision!

Imagine you are participating in a media interview. Prepare a short statement in answer to the questions:

  1. What is yoga?
  2. What is Iyengar yoga?

The audience is the general public, with no prior knowledge of the subject but with preconceptions about yoga formed by exposure to contemporary popular culture.

Think about how you’d wish to communicate about yoga/Iyengar yoga and which aspects you’d want to prioritise.

Now, imagine that you are answering the same questions put to you by a prospective student making an enquiry about joining a class.

Trainees can take turns to present to a group, or to a class they know well.
