Therapy Teacher Status Requirements
1. Preliminary Therapy Status
To apply for preliminary status, teachers must be level 2 or above, assist in a group therapy class or in a one-to-one class with a level 3 or 4 registered therapy teacher. This status qualifies the teacher to cover a therapy class with students known to them and to teach one-to-one classes with the guidance of their therapy teacher.
To obtain preliminary therapy status:
- Train with a therapy teacher for at least 12 months, with a minimum of 30 hours of face-to-face work with students.
- Complete a case study under the close supervision and approval of their therapy mentor, including:
- At least 10 documented sessions
- A sequence plan, adjustments made, and observations on progress
- Submit an application form outlining their experience and motivation for therapy work.
- Provide a recommendation letter from their therapy mentor.
2. Full Therapy Status
To apply for full therapy status, teachers must be level 3 or above. In exceptional circumstances, level 2 teachers may apply once they have attained the preliminary therapy status and are working towards level 3.
This status qualifies teachers to run therapy classes and workshops.
To obtain full therapy status, teachers must:
- Complete therapy training of a further 20 hours over 2 years.
- Submit a case study of 10 documented sessions; with a different condition to the first study. If the first study was a muscular skeletal condition, then organic or neurological or vice versa. As for Preliminary Therapy Status, this must be done under the close supervision and approval of their therapy mentor.
- Complete an application form detailing their therapy experience.
- Provide a recommendation letter from a therapy teacher.
An exception may be made for a level 3 teacher who meets the above criteria for therapy experience to be able to apply directly for Full Therapy status with two case studies.
Insurance Considerations
Teachers who achieve preliminary or full therapy status must ensure their insurance covers therapy teaching. This will involve selecting the appropriate therapy level in their insurance documentation.
